You pick out great flower, maybe some rosin to go with it. A few weeks later it's dry, harsh, and the smell you paid for is gone. Nearly every time, the reason is storage. Keeping cannabis fresh isn't complicated once you know what wrecks it.

What actually ruins it

Cannabis breaks down when it's exposed to four things: light, heat, air, and the wrong humidity. Get those under control and you've handled most of the problem.

Sunlight degrades cannabinoids and terpenes, so keep everything in the dark. Heat speeds up that breakdown and dries flower out, so cooler is better. Air goes stale on flower and dulls the smell over time, so limit how much it gets. Humidity is a balance: too damp invites mold, too dry leaves flower harsh and brittle.

Storing flower

For flower, you want cool, dark, and reasonably airtight.

• Use an airtight glass jar. A plain mason jar with a sealing lid is the classic for good reason. Glass doesn't hold odors or mess with flavor the way plastic bags do, and bags crush trichomes on top of that.
• Keep it cool and dark, like a cabinet or drawer away from windows and appliances. Room temperature in a dark spot is fine. You don't need the fridge.
• Watch the humidity. The sweet spot is roughly 55 to 62 percent relative humidity. A small two-way humidity pack dropped in the jar holds it there on its own, and it's the easiest upgrade you can make.
• Match the container to the amount when you can. A jar that's mostly empty holds a lot of air.

Skip the freezer for flower you plan to use soon. Freezing makes trichomes brittle, and handling frozen buds knocks them right off, taking the smell and potency with them.

Storing concentrates

Solventless concentrates like rosin and hash need a bit more care, because heat is their weak point. Gentle warmth is literally how rosin gets pressed, so leaving it warm keeps it changing.

• Keep it cold. For anything past a few days, the fridge is your friend. A lot of people keep fresh rosin refrigerated to hold its texture and smell.
• Use a non-stick container. Concentrates stick to nearly everything, so silicone or lined glass concentrate jars make life a lot easier.
• Let it warm up before you handle it. Cold rosin is stiff and tough to work with, but a minute out of the fridge fixes that.
• Keep air and light away, same as flower.

For long-term storage the freezer can work, but for anything you'll get through over the next few weeks, the fridge keeps the right balance of fresh and usable.

Quick do's and don'ts

• Do label your jars with the strain and the date you opened them.
• Do keep everything well out of reach of children and pets, ideally in a locking box.
• Don't leave anything in a hot car, on a sunny windowsill, or next to the stove.
• Don't trust thin plastic baggies with anything you want to last.
