Indica, Sativa, Hybrid: Does It Actually Matter?

Walk into any dispensary and the first question you'll get is "indica, sativa, or hybrid?" It's the oldest shorthand in cannabis, and it's also one of the most misunderstood. This is what these words actually mean, and where they fall short.

Where the labels come from

Indica and sativa started out as ways to describe the plant itself, how it grows, not how it makes you feel. Old-school indica plants tend to grow short and bushy. Sativas grow tall and lanky. After decades of crossbreeding, almost everything on the market today is a hybrid of the two, so the pure categories barely exist anymore.

Out of all that history came a rule of thumb you'll hear over and over. Indica usually gets called relaxing and better for evenings, hence the old budtender line "in-da-couch." Sativa usually gets called uplifting and more of a daytime thing. Hybrid lands somewhere in between, leaning one way or the other depending on the cross.

That shorthand has its uses, and it's a fine way to start a conversation. Just don't treat it as a promise. That's where people get tripped up.

Why the label only tells you half the story

Two flowers both labeled indica can feel pretty different from each other. What you actually experience has less to do with the indica or sativa bucket and more to do with the plant's specific chemistry: its mix of cannabinoids like THC and CBD, and especially its terpenes, the aromatic compounds that give every strain its own smell and character. How it was grown, when it was harvested, and how it was cured all matter too.

Put another way, indica versus sativa is the cover of the book. The terpene and cannabinoid profile is the story inside. We get into that in our terpene guide.

What to actually look at

Use the label as a first filter, then keep going.

  • Smell it if you can. Aroma is your best free clue to the terpene profile, so trust your nose. If it smells good to you, that counts for something.
  • Read the COA. A Certificate of Analysis shows the real cannabinoid numbers, and a full panel breaks down the terpenes too, which tells you a lot more than one word on a label.
  • Keep track of what you like. Note the specific strains that work for you, not just the category. The patterns show up faster than you'd think.
  • Ask your budtender. Tell them the kind of experience you want and they can steer you to a specific cut instead of a whole category.

How we think about it at ADK

We label every cut by type because it's a helpful place to start, but we'd rather you get to know the actual strain. Each of our strain pages lists lineage, terpenes, and a link to the lab results, so you can look past the category and find the flower that suits you.
